When it comes to versatility, the Standard Poodle
has it in abundance! The Standard Poodle is a good-natured,
beautiful dog that excels in the show ring, the field and - it's
favorite - in the home.
The Standard Poodle breed originated in either
Russia or Germany, and was perfected and popularized in France,
where it is known as "Caniche" - derived from the French word for
"Duck".
Known throughout Europe as a retriever of waterfowl,
the Standard Poodle makes an excellent family pet and sporting dog.
The Standard Poodle is closely related to the
Portuguese Water Dog and the Irish Water Spaniel. Well-behaved
and eager-to-please, the Standard Poodle loves to play with children
and makes a great watch dog, doing well in the city or the country.
The dense, harsh coat requires regular daily brushing and clipping
at least 4 times per year. Standard Poodles need plenty of outdoor
exercise and are better suited to a house than an apartment.

Breed History: |
| Oldest of the three Poodle breeds, the
Standard Poodle is the original from which the Miniature and Toy
Poodle breeds were developed. Known in Russia and Germany since the
early 16th century, the Standard Poodle is related to the Portuguese
Water Dog and Irish Water Spaniel. Though its first job was that of
a retriever of waterfowl, the versatile Standard Poodle was used in
France to scent out truffles, a mushroom-like delicacy. In time, the
breed's sense of fun and high trainability made it popular as a
circus dog and by the end of the 18th century, it was said every
traveling circus had a performing Poodle act. |

| The Standard Poodle possesses a proud carriage,
dignified air and great joie de vivre. Several people have taken the
